As an emerging film director, Rejoice Eteng is confident in the path she is forging for herself and clear about why she started: to make the audience live her story rather than just explain it.
Rejoice’s Instagram bio states, “the stories we often think are boring are the ones that need to be told, with intention.” This reflects the type of stories she is passionate about.
As such, her upcoming project Dented addresses Female Genital Mutilation, exploring the conflict between cultural identity and physical preservation, and how institutions meant to prepare women can cause structural violence.
Modernisation often obscures some archaic realities. This is what Rejoice aims to demonstrate with Dented, that certain traumatic cultural practices still subtly exist.
